About Know Stroke and Founder/ Stroke Survivor David Dansereau
Why Stroke Advocacy Still Matter To Me
Stroke Recovery is unlike any other patient journey. Yet, despite this fact that it is a leading cause of adult disability in the U.S., is the nation’s 4th highest cause of death, kills more women than breast cancer each year, and presently is witnessing ‘young stroke’ as now the fastest growing age group in long term survivorship, there remains no unifying rallying point for stroke survivors and care partners.
For as long as I have been advocating for better care for stroke survivors, I’ve heard the stroke community asking for a symbol or color they could rally around. What they have been trying to say and describe is really this, “we have no unified community or organization that really cares and supports us”.
The shared experience of the stroke community is a story of sudden and shocking loss, sometimes ending in death, and in survivorship often leaves feelings of despair and disorientation that slowly gives way to hope, which then opens a path to recovering physically, mentally and emotionally.
